Selecting a Cellphone Provider

There are many options to choose from when deciding on a Phone Plan. By doing your homework in advance of your arrival, you can avoid any last-minute research and decision making to ensure a seamless connection.

Click through the drop down steps below to weigh your options and plan ahead

  • Check if your current phone is compatible with Canadian networks. If not, you may need to consider purchasing a new phone or unlocking your existing phone for use with a Canadian SIM card.

  • Canada has several mobile network providers that offer a range of plans and services. Research different providers to find one that offers good coverage, affordable rates, and suitable packages for international students.

Widely used Ontario cellphone providers are:

    Bell

    Rogers

    Freedom Mobile

    Telus

    Koodo

    Fido

    Virgin Mobile

  • Select a phone plan that aligns with your budget and communication needs, such as data, voice calls, and text messages.

Be on the lookout for providers that offer “back to school” promotions during the months of August & September. These usually include deals or offers only available to enrolled students.

  • Depending on your chosen provider and plan, you will likely need to visit a retail location to finish the set-up.

Many of the major providers have numerous retail locations across the city. In relation to campus, there are four cellphone providers (Bell, Fido, Freedom Mobile, and Rogers) only 2 blocks away at the Yonge and Bloor intersection.

Depending on your financial situation, it is wise to first set-up your Canadian Bank account. You may need to provide payment or even process a credit/debit card for automatic contract payments.
