Is victoria college really all that old?
Indeed it is! Victoria College was founded way back in 1836! Since then, Vic has participated in traditional Orientation activities. However, in those 187 years, Orientation has changed drastically. Originally opened as Upper Canada Academy, it served as a pre-university space for both men and women to study and prepare for their futures. The school quickly became Victoria College and was granted the ability to award degrees—though initially, only to men.
Where women were once celebrated as scholars among their male counterparts, the degree-granting status of the college unfortunately left no space for women to continue their studies. This changed in 1884 when Victoria College split from the Methodist Church and merged with Albert College to become what we know today as Victoria University. Six years later, Victoria University federated with the University of Toronto. Despite strong opposition in Cobourg—including efforts to buy out the university to prevent the move—in 1892, the university relocated permanently to Toronto. At this time, women were welcomed back to Victoria College and could once again earn degrees!

What are some specific changes that have been made to orientation?
The Scrap: Once rooted in hazing practices for men, Orientation at Vic has evolved to become a cornerstone of student life for all students. In the past, physical brawls and challenges were considered a normal part of Orientation, often associated with the initiation process. However, today's orientation experience has transcended these outdated practices, embracing inclusivity and camaraderie among students from diverse backgrounds.
The Bob: A timeless tradition dating back to 1874, "The Bob" has remained a prominent element of Orientation at Victoria College. Originally organized by the sophomore class as a means to intimidate and embarrass freshmen, "The Bob" has transformed into the longest-running sketch comedy show in the country. Students of all years now come together to put on a show that primarily pokes fun at society, the news, and pop culture, fostering laughter and unity among participants.
Changing of Traditional Ceremonies: In the past, hazing and initiations were once the cornerstone of Orientation, yet these practices were rightfully prohibited as of 1988. However, at this time, men and women were still divided into separate groups during Traditional Ceremonies. One of the most significant changes since then has been the de-gendering of these ceremonies. Previously split between male and female students, Traditional Ceremonies became outdated, particularly for those identifying as transgender or gender-fluid. In a landmark move towards inclusivity, the very first gender-neutral ceremonies took place in 2016 at Convocation Hall, setting a precedent for future orientation events. This tradition continues to embrace diversity, ensuring that all students feel valued and respected at Victoria College.
