international student orientation

August 30 - September 1, 2018.

Our team of staff & upper year International Mentors will welcome you on campus, help you discover the city, and provide support & programming to help ensure a successful transition into university.

You are eligible to participate in the program if you are:

  • an International Student
  • registered as a Victoria College student and/or living at Victoria College
  • in your first year at the University of Toronto

Cost: $100*

(While we cover all the programming cost, this fee helps cover your accommodation and meals  during the 3 days of International Student Orientation.)

Welcome 7:00-7:30pm at Victoria College Quad

Join us for a warm welcome from the Office of the Dean of Students, and to celebrate the start of International Student Orientation!

Walking Tour: Neighbourhood Necessities 7:30-8:00pm -- Meet in the Wendy Cecil Atrium

Learn about what's in the neighbourhood with our first walking tour -- we'll be pointing out the closest food vendors, grocery, pharmacy, 24/7 store, and where you can buy clothes and bedding.

A wonderful chance to learn names and friendly faces, and make new friends from all over the world!

Dean's Welcome 11:00-11:30am at Victoria College Building

The Dean of Students will join us to share a welcome and overview of the supports available in the Dean's Office, including the International Transition Mentorship Program.

Registrar's Welcome 11:30am-12:00pm at Victoria College Building

The Registrar will share a welcome and outline of the resources available at the Registrar's Office.

Lunch at Burwash 12:00-12:45pm

Get Connected: Asking and Support 1:00-2:00pm at victoria College Building

This workshop will discuss various student challenges, and the resources and support available. Ask and get connected. Your mentors will also be around to answer any questions and share their experiences!

Get Your T-Card!: Koffler House 2:00-3:30pm -- Meeting Location TBD

Mentors will be leading groups to the T-Card Office to get your T-Card, which will be your official university identification. They will also be pointing out other services in the Koffler House, such as Health and Wellness Centre.

Free Time (set up bank account, cell SIM card, etc.) 3:30-5:00pm -- Meeting Locations TBD

This is a chance for you to set up your bank account, get a cell phone SIM card, or run errands. Mentors will be available!

Dinner at Burwash 5:00-6:00pm

Walking Tour: Campus 6:00-7:30pm

Tour will meet in the Wendy Cecil Atrium. Learn more about the campus, like where the libraries, athletic facilities, health clinic, and resource offices are, by joining a mentor-led walking tour! This activity is optional.

Sports on Marg Ad Field 6:00-7:30pm

Or, join the Victoria College Athletic Association (VCAA) for a fun time playing soccer/football, Frisbee, and other active games! This activity is optional.

Discover the Cat's Eye Student Lounge with board games, full access to our arcade room, and movies (requests taken)! This activity is optional.

friday august 31st

Centre for International Experience (CIE) Important Documents 9:30-10:30am at Victoria College Building

Learn about the UHIP Card benefits, and other important document details at this workshop led by the CIE.

Services Expo 10:30am-12:00pm -- Meet in Wendy Cecil Atrium

Discover the many different services available to you at this expo, such as Hart House athletics, a variety of student unions, Campus Police, and so much more.

Lunch at Burwash 12:00-12:45pm

Discover Your Library 1:00-1:30pm at E.J. Pratt Library (meeting place TBD)

The first of these short and interactive workshops will help familiarize you with the useful supports at the library. Looking to get started on a research paper? Learn about your personal librarian, research appointments, and more.

Writing Centre Support 1:30-2:00pm at Victoria College Building

This workshop will introduce you to the writing centre. Learn about writing well, booking an appointment with a writing advisor, and getting tailored assistance with your written work.

Academic Success 2:00-2:30pm at Victoria College Building

Worried about how you can prepare for exams and other marked work? Learn more about the learning strategists and appointments you can make to help support your academic success.

Movement Break 2:30-3:00pm

Take this chance to get a drink, go to the washroom, or step outside for some fresh air and to relax.

Stay Connected: Tips and Advice Panel 3:00-4:30pm at Victoria College Building

Stay connected with an experienced panel of guests! Upper-year international students and mentors will be sharing stories from their U of T journey, and university staff will be present to answer any questions you may have.

Free Time 4:30-5:00pm

Dinner prep! It's the last official night of ISO, and we'll be celebrating and taking a group photo! Semi-formal attire is encouraged.

Celebration Dinner 5:00-6:00pm

Walking Tour: Yorkville 6:00-7:30pm

Tour will meet in Wendy Cecil Atrium. Discover the historic Yorkville neighbourhood, just a few steps from Vic campus. There will be lots to see, including restaurants, shopping/service centres, and unique boutiques.

Sports on Marg Ad Field 6:00-7:30pm

Or, join the Victoria College Athletic Association (VCAA) for a fun time playing soccer/football, Frisbee, and other active games! This activity is optional.

saturday september 1st

Meeting location to be determined. Need bedding, pillows, dishes, and other household items? IKEA is a great place to go! We will be leading a group trip to IKEA -- lunch will be on your own, whenever you want, at IKEA restaurant!

Free Time (Mentors in the Quad) 3:00-5:00pm

Get settled in with your purchases, nap, or relax! Mentors will be in the quad for drop-in programming if you'd like to connect.

Dinner at Burwash 5:00-6:00pm

Walking Tour: Kensington 6:00-7:30pm

Tour meeting in the Wendy Cecil Atrium. Discover the vibrant Kensington neighbourhood! filled with a variety of unique stores, delicious food, and vintage clothing sellers, there is lots to do and eat! We will be leading a tour to enjoy the culture of this portion of the city.
